Religion - Italy
Italy is mainly made up of Catholicism, the majority of Italians are baptized as Catholics. Locating a Catholic church in Italy is usually very easy since more than 80 percent of the population is Catholic. The main Catholic church is located in the center of Rome, which is lead by the Pope in Vatican City (Perkins, 2020). The current Pope is Pope Francis who gets his name from St. Francis of Assisi, who is a patron saint from Italy. Pope Francis came into power in 2013 after Pope Benedict XVI in 2013 resigned. Pope Francis is mainly known for his liberal values which is different from other Pope's in the past. Francis is also known for his other views such as social welfare and humility (Perkins, 2020). The relationship from the church and government is separate, it is regulated by treaties that grant the church social and financial benefits (Francis & Giordan, 2021). Relating this information back to the book, in chapter five it talks about the different types of identity development and for this situation it relates to Majority Identity. It is a sense that belongs to a dominant group and it has five different phases that can relate to this situation. We encourage you to immerse yourself with the religion for as long as you can, even if you do not believe in it try to be as accepting as possible! (Martin, Nakayama pgs. 177-183)
