Food - Italy
The food in Italy is considered a main staple of what the culture stands for. The three main things that are important to the Italians are food, cooking and family! It helps them keep their matter of pride and feels like they are not losing their identity. The Italians perfected their craft of making these delicious dishes such as Veal Marsala, different types of Pizzas and some desserts like Italian cheesecake (Costantini, 2018). However, they did not want to incorporate with the American culture at first because they did not trust the customs because they were so proud of their own. These Italians saw their ethnicity as a power strategy and to be used for positive impact once they became accustomed to the American culture. For example, they would occupy large spaces for markets of food in New York and they would also teach their children that are now American born the Italian way of doing this. It all started where they grew up with their parents teaching them the correct way of cooking, preparing and serving the many delicious foods they have to offer. This can relate back to our book by talking about the Intercultural relationship that Italy and the United States have built over the long period of time. There are many cultural differences between the two, but they both have learned so much from each other from accepting each other. Another good example is the Stage Model, and that discusses the view that relationships develop in predictable phases over time. (Martin/Nakayama, pg. 409)
